Gardening season has arrived!

At long last, the the perennials are making their appearance. I started annual seeds over the winter in milk bottles and they’re now cute little seedlings, ready to plant in the garden. The Daffodils are done, my Irises are in bloom, and the peonies are just about ready to pop open. My husband loves to grow food and I love to grow herbs and flowers. The mint and thyme make great ground cover and they return perennially.

I’m a sucker for garden centers. I can’t stop buying flowers. It’s an addiction.

Here are some of my favorite Garden Centers in Mount Washington Valley and a little beyond.

McSherry’s Nursery and Garden Center

2599 East Main Street, Center Conway NH 03813

603-447-5442 mcnsy@roadrunner.com

McSherry’s is a family business, going back three generations, since 1962. When Gail McSherry

retired, she sold the business to Jeff O’Donal, the third generation of the O’Donal Nursery

family in nearby Gorham Maine. That’s why their motto is “Our Roots Grow Deep in Our

Community”. You can wander endlessly through McSherry’s three greenhouses and outdoor plant

nursery, providing a wide variety of annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs and herbs & veggies. As

well, they have a Garden Shop with a fine array of tools, pots, decorations, seeds and more.

Kimball’s Greenhouse

52 Mason Hill Road, South Waterford Maine

Just last summer, I accidentally discovered Kimball’s Greenhouse. What a great find! I was

delighted to wander through the gardens and greenhouses. Kimball’s is a small family-owned

business that’s bursting with color! Located in an idyllic setting, with a beautiful view of Bear

Mountain, You’ll find a beautiful selection of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, herbs and

veggies with affordable prices. It’s well worth the trip, just about 15 minutes from Fryeburg.

Wayside Farm & Great Northern Berries

Established in 1981, Wayside is a small area farm owned by Ben and Wendy Shambaugh,

producing a great variety of fine quality hardy perennials for home gardeners. They produce a

an excellent assortment of high quality flowering plants that will ensure pride and success in

gardening. They grow and sell these plants on location at their greenhouses in North Sandwich,

NH, propagating and nurturing them until they are ready for your garden. Perennials, shrubs

and herbs sold at Wayside are produced from cuttings, seed and by division. Great Northern

Berries produces interesting, high quality, fully hardy berry bushes for sale to northern

gardeners.
